About the Artwork
“This is a self-portrait taken shortly after my operation. The addition of the voice box (thanks to Photoshop) is meant to show how my voice has been boxed in and blanked out.”
Karen Elias is a retired teacher whose left vocal cord was paralyzed in the wake of a thyroid operation. “Since my voice quality has been significantly degraded, I am finding other ways to express myself. One of these expressive outlets is photography.”
