About the Artwork
“Every day at work we are surrounded by objects and images that are common in medical practice, but not in daily life: for example, a saline IV flush; a tiny plastic cup used to distribute medications; a crinkly green emesis bag. These are the contents of the hospital supply closet. I interact with these objects practically, at work; but I also process them aesthetically, as images.
“This project is an exercise in observation of detail and aesthetic understanding of commonplace objects and images of medical practice. Dedicating time and space to engaging with a commonplace object or image illuminates subtlety that might not otherwise be appreciated. This shift in perspective can provide a renewed appreciation for the commonplace and for the value of daily tasks and observations.”
Zelda Blair is currently in the second year of her residency training at Highland Family Medicine in Rochester, NY. Prior to this, she studied painting, printmaking and textile arts at Pratt Institute, earning a BFA in 2013. Since then, she has since continued to make art nonprofessionally. Zelda says, “Making art is a way of interacting with the world that enriches my experience of observation and communication and sustains my awareness of daily encounters with the immense beauty of life.”
