Transitions

About the Artwork

“Many transitions are difficult: those occurring as we progress from childhood to adulthood, as well as transitions through poor health, illness and recovery. Transitions are dynamic periods of disruption, change and growth that are often studied by physicians, psychologists and sociologists; but all around us, nature is an exemplar of transition, and much can be learnt from steeping ourselves in our forests, waterways and oceans.

“The space between the air and sea, as we transition between gas and liquid, is one of the most physically and chemically active environments on earth and vital to our survival. This photo, taken of the interspace between the ocean and our atmosphere, was taken with an Olympus TG-6 and is unedited. It depicts the turbulence of transition and the peace and clarity gained as we move beyond this state.”

Frances Milat is a physician, researcher and writer from Melbourne, Australia. She photographs and writes about nature and healing.
