“My partner was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2017. This photo summarizes not the entire treatment plan (which included surgery and radiation as well as chemotherapy), but the beginning steps, as well as additional diagnostic studies ordered at the outset of this journey. The information was presented simply, yet the life changes that lay ahead were overwhelming in magnitude.”

A few years ago, after retiring from a long career as a psychologist, and when I was deep into an MFA program in writing, I wrote a poem exploring the reasons, past and present, for my intermittent, middle-of-the-night insomnia.

“I took this photo of my partner in September, on a morning walk after her first chemotherapy session for breast cancer. It was the beginning of what will be a long and challenging journey for both of us. Although we’ll have many more dark moments as a result of her illness, there is a fundamental sense of moving toward a positive outcome, moving into the light.”
