About the Artwork
“Technological innovation propels current surgical trends, producing results than are seemingly newer, faster and better–but are they? It is the surgeon’s role to answer this by utilizing her head, heart and hands to serve her patients best. This acupuncture model serves as a reminder to surgeons to beware the risks of operating, literally and figuratively, from a detached head space. It reminds us to combine intellect with all aspects of ourselves, symbolized by the acupuncture meridians, which traverse the entire body.”
Vanessa A. Hortian has her roots in integrative medicine, acupuncture, bodywork and dance. After pursuing Western medical education, she ultimately chose colorectal surgery as her specialty. “Today, I am honored to serve as a surgeon rooted in the synergy between all aspects of my eclectic background and the connection between head, heart and hands.”

Dear Dr. Sangoram,
Thank YOU so much for viewing my work and for taking the time to share such kind words with me! Your experience of my piece is beautiful and I am so glad to learn of its impact! It takes a special person to “see” this kind of work and “hear” its message, so thank you for being so open.
I believe your specialty is Neonatology, which is, in and of itself, fascinating and essential in the realm of western medicine. Even further, in my mind it masterfully bridges the intricacy of science with the beauty of compassionate care – an art in its own right. Thank you for doing all that you do as well! Many warm wishes to you and thank you again for reaching out!
This is amazing that you as a surgeon contemplate a broader view of other frames of physiological function before you cut. the acupuncture lines powerfully evoke visually a system that might not usually get considered in Western medical treatment contexts. thank you for sharing! Thank you for what you do and who you are.
