About the Artwork
“My earliest memories are of the plants and shrubs that grew near the Brooklyn apartment we lived in when I was very young. In those carefree days I made elaborate chalk drawings on the sidewalk and wrote poetry on the back of my hand because there was no paper handy. After retiring from a long career in nursing, I began to turn my garden into a native pollinator garden as a way to care for our hurting planet. More and more, my concern for our earthly home has shown up in my art and poetry. As I navigate ‘the third half of life,’ I realize more and more the need to integrate all that has gone before. This is the work of old age–pulling all the fragments of a life together.”
Barbara Kaufmann was a registered nurse for almost fifty years before retiring to study “the art and science of aging” up close and personally. She uses her art, poetry, a thriving native garden and regular hikes in the woods and beaches near her home as a way to explore this new phase of life. Her artwork (often including her poetry) has been published in many online and print journals over the past decade.
