About the Artwork
- “This etching was done after a series of neuro-opthamology appointments for my oldest son. I had to bring my youngest son along to them as well. The staff would have us wait for at least twenty minutes or longer in an examination room filled with buttons, knobs, lights, switches and all things fascinating to a child. I found it amusing that there was a sign asking parents to please keep our children away from the equipment. I smiled and always wondered ‘Can parents play with the buttons?’ “
- Rachel Mindrup is a professional artist and resident assistant professor at Creighton University, in Omaha. She received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston. Her current painting practice is about the study of the figure and portraiture in contemporary art and its relation to medicine. Her son’s neurofibromatosis means spending a lot of time as a family in hospital and clinic settings.

Beautiful use of texture: hair, cabinet door, stool fabric, and pants. Must have been tough to monitor all those non-touching rules when worried about your other child’s exam.
