About the Artwork
“This piece expresses a decades-long struggle with hypochondria, anxiety and chronic pain. Some illnesses are caused not by a discreet event but rather by the accumulation of wounds not visible to the eye. Some wounds are self-inflicted, some are caused by medical professionals who don’t understand how to recognize or treat issues related to the mind and heart, and some are caused by the people we love most. Recovery is possible, and the first step is to shine a light on each arrow.”
Mary Amato is a multidisciplinary teaching artist and poet, the author of many award-winning works for children, and the cofounder of Firefly Shadow Theater, a company that explores storytelling with cut paper, light and the human body.
