First Crack of Dawn–Bar Harbor

About the Artwork

“In September 2018, I was diagnosed with stage III male breast cancer, and I completed treatment in June of the following year. In February 2021, I was diagnosed with stage IV male breast cancer. Since my cancer journey has started, I have continued making my art and have focused on living in the moment and enjoying each day.

“In August of 2021, I visited Bar Harbor, ME. This photo collage is made up of thirty-seven photos taken over three mornings; each day I woke up before dawn to capture the first East Coast location to see the sunrise. One morning it was raining, one morning it was foggy, and one morning the sun came out. I wrote a note to myself: ‘Live in the moment, put in the work, it is all worth it to get to this place and beyond.’ “

Matthew Parker has been creating unique craft, photographic collages, since 2005. His work began at the University of Tennessee School of Architecture. Their curriculum taught him to observe time, understand spatial relationships and gather the experience of a specific place. Over the years, he has developed his craft to include rotating the camera to achieve different angles and layering photos of a given place at different times of day.
